Description: This is the first I've ever seen and will now sell from my collection.....I originally bought this for the "patch"
but upon inspection, I saw the 1973 date on the Navy Sateen OG-107 Utility Shirt and realized just how special this Vietnam War piece was.....Once it's gone, it's gone...…
MIUW and its predecessors had their mission-roots going back before the Civil War.
As the unit was establishing itself in a permanent home, Navy experience in the Vietnam War brought a recognition that an organization with a broader mission and range of capabilities beyond strictly harbor defense was required. The command was designated as an Inshore Undersea Warfare Division.
The IUW community adopted the shark as its symbol.
The shark itself designates the boats that would be assigned to IUW divisions. The teeth represent the various weapons, while the lightening bolts indicate the electronic components of the radar and communications systems. The shark has earphones to indicate the underwater sonar systems employed.
By the mid-1970s the command occupied a full- fledged naval installation.
It was redesignated as a Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit and began training to be ready for deployment as an independent command.
A
Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit (MIUWU)
was a component of the
United States Navy
's
Force Protection Package
tasked with providing seaward security to joint logistics over-the-shore operations from either a port or harbor complex or unimproved beach sites. The mobile inshore undersea warfare unit is equipped with mobile
radar
,
sonar
, and communications equipment located within mobile elements, such as a tent, specially modified
HMMWV
, or truck-mountable container.
A great piece of Naval history, worthy of display in any collection.....
