    Description

HI there. You are bidding on AN EXTREMELY DESIRABLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK FEATURING VIRGINIA MAYO (BORN NOVEMBER 30, 1920-DIED JANUARY 17, 2005).
MISS MAYO WAS HOLLYWOOD GROOMED FROM THE AGE OF 6
UNDER THE GUIDANCE AND INFLUENCE OF HER AUNT, ALICE, THE ROLE MODEL WHO TAUGHT HER PERFORMING ARTS, DANCE, STAGE, ELOCUTION AND OPENED UP UNTO HER  THE  INCREDIBLE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT. REACHING HOLLYWOOD WAS VIRGINIA'S GREAT GOAL AND ACHIEVEMENT WHO WAS DISCOVERED IN BILLY ROSE'S DIAMOND HORSESHOE IN NEW YORK AND RECEIVED AN OFFER FROM SAMUEL GOLDWYN AFTER TOURING IN THE SHOW, "MRS. ASTOR'S PET HORSE." AND ALSO DOING "BANJO EYES" WITH EDDIE CANTOR. SHE DID A SCREEN TEST & WAS SIGNED TO A 7-YEAR CONTRACT. HER FIRST NOTABLE ROLE WAS IN JACK LONDON (1943) WHICH STARRED HER FUTURE HUSBAND, MICHAEL O'SHEA. IN A RATHER SIDEWINDING JOURNEY THROUGH HOLLYWOOD, VIRGINIA WAS ORIGINALLY DISCOVERED IN VAUDEVILLE AS A SHOWGIRL, AND IN HER EARLIEST FILMS WAS MAINLY A SONG & DANCE GIRL WITH THE LIKES OF BOB HOPE AND DANNY KAYE- HER FAVORITE MOVIE WAS "SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE," WITH RONALD REAGAN. SHE LATER TOOK ON MUCH MORE DRAMATIC AND MEATIER ROLES, AND SO APPARENTLY AVOIDED THE "TYPE" LABEL, WHICH SHE SAID AT ONE POINT MAY HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN A LIABILITY IN TERMS OF PUBLIC RECOGNITION. HER ROLE IN THE POLITICAL MOVIE "THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)," WHICH WON 9 OSCARS, AND SHOWED ASPECTS OF HOW WORLD WAR 2 AFFECTED INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR FAMILIES. VIRGINIA'S ROLE IN THIS MOVIE WAS A HEARTFELT CONTRIBUTION TO HER COUNTRY WHICH REALLY WENT BEYOND THE SILVER SCREEN. A FEW YEARS HENCE, IN ONE OF THE BEST FILM NOIR GANGSTER MOVIES EVER (DIRECTED BY RAOUL WALSH), SHE CO-STARRED WITH JAMES CAGNEY IN "WHITE HEAT" (1949) AS HIS WIFE AND GUN MOLL. IN ALL.
