Description
US Army troops early in Vietnam were issued M-56 "universal" ammo pouches, specially designed to accommodate ammo for the venerable M-1 Garand and BAR. "Grunts" found the pouches too long to effectively carry ammo for the "sweet sixteen", and the design was changed to a shorter pattern in 1968. This US Army Vietnam M-56 "UNIVERSAL" AMMO POUCH is in excellent condition, with the "post" portion of the front closure system remaining fully flexible, the "tab" portion of the top snap hook having chipped away long ago, and with some light scattered age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the pouch is in excellent shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the crisp OD canvas construction. Most interestingly, it's "US" marked at front, boasts a fully functional "tongue and loop" closure front flap, and is dated 1966 (DSA-100) in the nomenclature stamping at the underside of that flap. It sports fully intact darkened metal ALICE clips at back, features most of the original straps, snaps, and buckles throughout, and is a beautiful example of a rare, original US Army Vietnam M-56 "UNIVERSAL" AMMO POUCH. No second pouch included. Now celebrating over 20 years on eBay.
